The church of the Noordhoek (English)

The church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was designed by the renowned architect Pierre Cuypers and completed in 1898. Cuypers had been given the assignment by parish priest dr. George van Zinnicq Bergmann. The initial design included a tower, which ultimately could not be realised due to a lack of money. Nonetheless, the majestic church was the largest place of worship in Tilburg.

Over the years, the original interior of the neo-gothic building was adjusted several times. Twelve stained-glass windows by Joep Nicolas (1938-1939) and new murals by Egbert Dekkers (1954) were put in, among other things.

In 1975 the church was pulled down and never before had the demolition of a building in Tilburg been met with so much resistance and caused so much upheaval. The result was an unsightly empty field which remained vacant for a long time.
