As early as 1853 there had been private enterprises for the supply of gas, but in 1871 the local authorities decided to start a gas factory itself. This factory was built from 1872 onwards and situated in the Lange Nieuwstraat. In 1873 the distribution of coal gas could be started. In 1909 practically all buildings and streetlamps in Tilburg had been connected to the gas network.

In 1910 it was decided to offer electricity, which was a new source of energy, as well. Next to the gas factory a new factory with cooling towers was built. In 1911 the municipal supply of electricity was started and from then on Tilburg has its own so-called Municipal Gas and Electricity Factories.

In 1927, the two departments were separated but the municipal administration was maintained. In 1948 two new cooling towers were built and a cooling water well was constructed.
