Data Science Center

Owing to the rise of social media and the Internet of Things, with data storage expenses plummeting and data computing power skyrocketing, quantities of available data have mushroomed in recent years. Data science is the multidisciplinary field dealing with data and aiming to extract useful insights from data, leading to more intelligent decisions and, eventually, better results.

Unique role

Tilburg University plays a unique role in this realm because it has virtually all requisite knowledge and expertise available on-site, not only knowledge of “hard” domains such as datamining, artificial intelligence and analytics, but also knowledge of their legal and ethical aspects. Four Tilburg faculties are involved in the Data Science Center Tilburg (DSC/t): the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the Tilburg School of Humanities, the Tilburg Law School and the Tilburg School of Economics and Management. Typical DSC/t application areas are health, marketing, human resources, logistics, humanitarian aid and finance. To cluster valorization activities within the scope of the University’s impact program, three themes were defined, one of them being Creating Value from Data. A remarkable initiative is the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science, located in the former Mariënburg monastery in ’s Hertogenbosch.
