Centers of excellence (English)

The University has five multidisciplinary research centers that have been designated university Centers of Excellence by the Executive Board. Independent committees must assess whether each of these institutes, which are expected to play a prominent role at national and international levels, meet the requirements. These committees examine the focus and impact of their research effort, the degree of external funding, their relations with society and the corporate world and the individual researcher’s identification with the center concerned. Every five years, these Centers are evaluated to establish whether they still deserve to be given the predicate of “excellent.” The five current Centers of Excellence, which obtained their predicates between 2001 and 2015, each have a lemma of their own in this encyclopedia. They are:

• Netspar - 2011

The Network for Studies on Pensions, Aging and Retirement, established in 2005, is a think tank and knowledge network in the field of pensions and ageing. Netspar aims to improve our understanding of the socio-economic consequences of pensions, ageing and old age in the Netherlands and Europe. Netspar founders: Professor Lans Bovenberg and Professor Theo Nijman. In 2017, its director was Professor Casper van Ewijk.

• INTERVICT - 2011

The International Victimology Institute Tilburg, established in 2005, promotes and performs interdisciplinary research contributing to the empowerment and support of victims of crime and abuse of power. INTERVICT founder: Professor Marc Groenhuijsen. In 2017, its director was Professor Anthony Pemberton.

• TILEC - 2012

The Tilburg Law and Economics Center, established in 2002, explores the governance of economic activity, particularly in the fields of competition, innovation and market regulation, as in healthcare, energy and telephony. TILEC founders: Professor Eric van Damme and Professor Pierre Larouche. In 2017, its directors were Professor Panos Delimatsis and dr. Florian Schütt.

• CoRPS - 2014

The Center of Research on Psychology in Somatic diseases, established in 2008, examines the relation between the human mind and the body, with a view to improving care for patients with chronic or psychosomatic disorders. CoRPS founder/director: Professor Johan Denollet.

• TiCC – 2015

The Tilburg center for Cognition and Communication, established in 2008, studies human behavior through experiments, questionnaires and Big Dataset analyses. TiCC develops and implements computer and cognition models and coincides with recent developments in neural networks. TiCC founder: Professor Jaap van den Herik. In 2017, its director was Professor Emiel Krahmer.
