Campus data

With over 13,000 students (1,700 of them foreign) and almost 2,000 staff, the University is a major organization, occupying a campus with a surface of 190,000 square meters, almost twenty hectares. The campus has 14 buildings, with a joint 145,000 square meter floor surface. In these buildings, there are 108 lecture halls with a total of 6,040 chairs. With student numbers on the rise, the auditorium was also temporarily used as a lecture hall in the 2017-2018 academic year.

Chalks and whiteboards

In the year 2017, Tilburg University was offering 71 study programs (41 of them English taught): 22 Bachelor’s programs and 49 Master’s programs. Though teaching is modernizing in a great many ways, 7,500 chalks are still used each year, and 5,000 board erasers are required to wipe the green chalkboards clean again. These are increasingly being replaced by whiteboards, and 3,500 special whiteboard markers were purchased in 2016. In the year when the University celebrated its 90th anniversary, 34 research groups were active on campus. Together, Tilburg scholars published 1,579 articles, and 175 PhD ceremonies were held in the auditorium.

A room on your own

Many staff (professors, particularly) had rooms of their own until recently, but this too is set to change. The 1,297 office spaces are increasingly shared spaces. Parking places are an area of concern. There were 1,112 of them in the year 2017, but as more and more students are taking their cars (or their mom’s or dad’s cars) to campus, this number may not suffice.
